Barnes & Noble now operates more than 700 stores across the United States, according to a Fortune report published on October 24, 2026 that examined chief executive James Daunt's approach to the bookstore chain.

The report, part of Fortune's Behind the Business series, was reported by Fortune's Phil Wahba. It described Barnes & Noble as a company once widely viewed as another retailer that would be undone by Amazon, and said Daunt's plan centers on making the largest book chain in the country appealing to shoppers again.

Fortune presented the segment as a video feature. The outlet did not state in the segment what Barnes & Noble's store count had been previously or over what period the chain reached its current size.

This story was first reported by Fortune.
