Buyers weighing a first business should look harder at home services, a category where the demand is non-discretionary and the published numbers are unusually specific, according to a Small Business Trends review of franchises for sale published on November 5, 2026.

The case rests on arithmetic rather than enthusiasm. Mr. Rooter, with more than 260 locations and over 55 years in plumbing, reports average gross sales of $2.09 million per location. The brand ranked the top HVAC and duct-cleaning franchise in the 2026 Entrepreneur Franchise 500 operates more than 230 locations and averages $1.56 million in gross sales, built on recurring service work. Initial investments across the category run from about $30,000 to more than $300,000, a band that includes buyers who cannot write a seven-figure check.

The counterargument is cost discipline. Royalty fees and other continuing obligations do not pause when a slow quarter arrives, and gross sales are not earnings. Averages also hide the spread between the best and worst operators.

Still, a furnace failure, a burst pipe or water damage is not a purchase a household defers. Restoration operators such as Paul Davis Restoration and Disaster Blaster sell into that same involuntary demand, as do lower-entry options including House Doctors and Maid My Home Network, which the review puts at roughly $30,000. Neighborly alone lists 19 home service brands, among them Aire Serv and Molly Maid. The prospective owner's real work is comparing training, support and local market saturation before signing.
