Microsoft disclosed pricing and specifications for its Surface Laptop Ultra at an event in San Francisco on October 7, during the city's Tech Week, TechCrunch reported.
The laptop comes in two base configurations, one starting at $2,600 and a more powerful version starting at $3,700, with memory and storage upgrades pushing the price to $5,900. Microsoft said the top-end device is already out of stock. The company also introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a workstation built on Nvidia's RTX Spark chip that starts at $6,000 and ships with developer tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL and PowerShell 7.
Both machines are pitched as able to run AI models locally at no cost, and they run a revised version of Windows 11 with a feature called Execution Containers for sandboxing AI agents. Satya Nadella, chief executive of Microsoft, said the feature will be available to all Windows 11 users and that the company is enabling the capability "not just for our apps but apps for anyone's agent."
Microsoft is targeting developers, offering up to $1,000 off for customers who trade in a MacBook Pro. In June, Nvidia said it had reached agreements with Microsoft and other PC makers to build Windows machines around the RTX Spark chip. Dell also detailed its XPS 16 Creator Edition on October 7, available for preorder at Best Buy for $3,800 with delivery later in October.
