Carden Kennels, based in Bangor, Maine, and its sister facility, The Uncommon Dog, in Holden, are run by owner Janet, whom the company's website credits with two decades of direct, practical work with animals and their behavior as the foundation for both locations. The two facilities, open since 2013, together offer boarding, daycare and grooming for dogs, cats and small pets.

Standards over guesswork

The company's website says its approach is shaped by certification through the International Boarding and Pet Services Association, plus continued study covering health protocols, facility management and how animals behave, rather than informal practice. It says every decision, from how its lodgings are designed to how it structures play groups, follows established standards of care. Its boarding lineup spans several tiers, including Classic Boarding, a Deluxe option with premium bedding, Family Rooms, a Cuddle Care Loft for quieter stays, and a Senior Care option, alongside daycare that requires a temperament evaluation first.

Recognition from a statewide readers' poll

The company's website cites recognition from the Downeast Dog News Readers' Poll in both 2025 and 2026. It says The Uncommon Dog was ranked Maine's best daycare and boarding business in 2025 and second in 2026, while Carden Kennels ranked second for daycare and boarding in 2025 and third in 2026, and was also recognized for grooming in both years. The company's website lists a combined total of more than 460 Google reviews across its two locations.

Staff training as a selling point

Carden Kennels says every staff member is certified in Pet First Aid and CPR, and that the company invests in ongoing training in animal behavior and enrichment techniques. The company describes its facilities as climate-controlled year-round and says it evaluates each animal individually rather than running every guest through the same routine.

The company's website lists its Bangor location at 880 Ohio St. and its Holden location, The Uncommon Dog, at 127 Main Rd.
