A trade passed down, then turned into a business

Southern Maine Epoxy runs its shop out of a Watkins Shores Road address in Casco, Maine, and tells visitors to its website that the business is a family one, now in its second generation. Owner Kendal Roy says he grew up in the epoxy trade, working jobs with his father starting around age 10, and that his father still runs his own flooring business a few miles up the road. Kendal and his wife later launched Southern Maine Epoxy on their own, carrying forward the same preparation habits and material knowledge Roy picked up on those early jobs.

The company installs resinous floor coatings in garages, basements, camps, kennels, showrooms and warehouses, and its website lays out the same sequence for every job regardless of setting: grind the concrete, repair cracks and joints, control moisture where it is a factor, then pour a base coat, a broadcast or metallic finish, and a chemical-resistant topcoat. "Most failed epoxy floors weren't bad resin — they were bad preparation," the company's website says, describing that grinding step as the difference between a coating that bonds to bare concrete and one that peels off whatever was sitting on the slab before it.

Staying deliberately small

The website says the company does not aim to be the largest coating outfit in the state, choosing instead to take on only the jobs it can complete properly. It says customers deal directly with the person doing the work, from the on-site estimate through the finished pour, and that a typical garage job starts with grinding and repair on the first day, with the pour and topcoat following on day two, often letting a homeowner park in the space again by the weekend. Southern Maine Epoxy says it quotes most jobs within a day or two of an initial call after assessing the slab in person.

The company says it specs its coatings around what actually hits a Maine floor each winter: road salt, snowmelt, sand and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Its working territory, the company says, spans Auburn, Falmouth, Scarborough, South Portland, Portland, Westbrook, Gorham, Standish, Windham, Naples and Raymond, radiating out from its Casco base across Cumberland and York counties, with Kendal Roy's father still working as a career installer in the same region.
