A heat-pump-only shop

Southern Maine Heat Pumps is a family-owned company based in Gorham, Maine, that describes itself on its website as having more than 30 years of combined staff experience. The business is registered as an Efficiency Maine vendor and says it installs Mitsubishi, Daikin and Samsung equipment, covering ductless mini-splits, multi-zone systems, heat-pump water heaters, commercial installations, replacements and upgrades, repairs, annual maintenance and energy-recovery ventilators. Its website is direct about what it will not do: "We do not service central AC or oil furnaces — we are a heat-pump shop."

The company says it also maintains and repairs heat pumps it did not originally install, servicing other major brands including Fujitsu, LG and Bosch alongside the systems it sells. Annual maintenance, the website says, includes checking refrigerant levels, cleaning coils and filters, inspecting wiring and confirming performance. On the installation side, the company says multi-zone systems that run several indoor units from one outdoor unit can cut energy use by as much as 40 percent compared with conventional heating and cooling, and that heat-pump water heaters run two to three times more efficiently than standard electric units.

Rebate paperwork and a wide territory

Southern Maine Heat Pumps says it handles the paperwork for Efficiency Maine rebates and federal tax incentives on behalf of customers, in addition to measuring a space and modeling the right system size before giving a quote. The company's certified technicians, its website says, are trained to meet or exceed local codes and Energy Star standards on every installation.

Based in Gorham, the company lists its coverage as 48 towns spanning York, Cumberland, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc and Kennebec counties, stretching from the Augusta area to York County. Towns named on its service-area page include Portland, Westbrook, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Biddeford, Saco, Brunswick, Lewiston, Auburn, Augusta, Gardiner, Sanford and Gray, among dozens of others. The company says same-week appointments for repairs are often available to homes in Portland, Gorham and across Cumberland County.
