A wedding DJ gets hired once per customer. Portside Productions built its business around that fact.

Greg Young's company in Lisbon, Maine, runs DJs, audio-visual production, lighting, photo booths and staging for events in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Because almost no customer has bought what it sells before, the company's website does the explaining that a salesperson would otherwise do. There is a page for every service, every venue it has worked, every wedding it has run and every question a nervous couple asks.

What it sells

The core product is DJ services, split into three customers. Wedding DJs are the main line, with a dedicated Portland page for the city's hotels and halls. Corporate DJs cover holiday parties and retreats. School DJs cover proms and teen events.

The second line is business-to-business. Audio-visual production means sound, video and lighting for conferences and galas, video projection, LED screens in 50, 70 and 75 inch sizes and livestream and hybrid events. The same inventory is available as equipment rentals, stage rentals and event lighting. Photo booths in open-air, selfie and lounge formats are sold to weddings, schools and companies alike.

The company's about page says it also sells and services sound systems, and names the standard it holds staff to: polished, proactive and reliable on-site. It hires through a careers page.

How it sells

Three things stand out about the way Portside markets itself.

First, it shows the product. The wedding page says the company posts long-form video from real receptions instead of short highlight clips, so a couple can watch how a night actually ran. Every wedding becomes a page: Anna and Ben, Emily and Chris and Kelly and Ben at The 1774 Inn; Andrew and Nikki at O'Maine Studios and Mark and Katie at Ocean Gateway in Portland; Beth and Rob at the Bar Harbor Regency; Megan and Tyler at the Samoset; Katie and Sean in Kennebunkport; Jess and Patrick at Union Bluff and Jesse and Michelle at the Viewpoint Hotel in York; Brandon and Megan at the Barn at Hatch Point; Molly and Cedric at Migis Lodge; Molly and Kyle at Maine Lakeside Cabins; Kathryn and Thomas at Tops'l Farm; Sydney and Dylan at Beech Hill Barn; Matt and Joc at The Everlee, where the couple arrived by helicopter; and Shauna and Nick at Waterville Valley in New Hampshire.

Second, it owns the venue search. A couple who has booked a room looks for a DJ who knows it, so Portside wrote a page for each venue it works: the Samoset Resort, the Bar Harbor Regency, The 1774 Inn, French's Point, Hatch Point and The Barn on the Pemi in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Each one describes what the company has already set up in that room.

Third, it answers the questions before they are asked. The blog is written for first-time buyers: a guide to finding the right wedding DJ, eight questions to ask before booking, common DJ myths, why personality matters as much as the music, the hidden work of a professional DJ, what the DJ is watching, how the company keeps a dance floor full and a case for seamless mixing in 2026. An FAQ page covers booths, uplighting, stages and rentals. A plan-the-night page shows a booked couple how their reception will run. A preferred vendors list names the vendors the company has worked beside.

Who runs it

Young is the owner and the lead DJ. The site describes him as someone who has run audio for everything from weddings to town meetings, and quotes a client calling him "always on time, on budget and on point." Chris Bouchard is the second DJ, hosting weddings at The Everlee, French's Point, Lakeside Cabins and Union Bluff. The reviews on the home page include the Town of Minot, a school and an elementary PTO alongside the couples.

What other owners can take from it

The lesson is not the DJ work. It is that a service business whose customers buy once can still compound. Every wedding Portside plays becomes a page, every venue becomes a page, and every question becomes a post, so the company's marketing grows with its job count rather than its ad budget.

Portside Productions, Inc. is at 10 Gayton Road, Suite 1, in Lisbon. Its privacy policy and contact page are on the site, and the phone is (207) 501-5353.
