Google said on October 13, 2026, that Android users in the United States can now build their own applications with AI and run them on their phones through Google Play without publishing them publicly, according to TechCrunch.

The personal apps are tied to a user's standard Google account and do not appear in Play's search results or listing pages, and are not shared with anyone besides the creator. Users can build an app in Google AI Studio and then launch it for their own use. The apps must still comply with Google Play's existing policies. The feature is initially limited to U.S. users age 18 and older.

Until now, running a self-built app natively on Android generally required publishing it to the Play Store, which reaches roughly 3 billion users, pushing many people toward web apps instead.

Google said users will later be able to share their creations with a limited group of trusted friends, and that a personal app can be converted into a public Play Store listing after trust and safety reviews.

"Play has evolved to become so much more than that," said Sam Bright, Google's vice president and general manager for Google Play and the developer ecosystem, in a press briefing.

Google also announced an AI game recommendation tool called Game Finder, drawing on data from 1.2 billion players, plus updates to its Ask Play assistant.
