Meta said on October 7 that it is deploying new artificial intelligence systems designed to catch advertisements and accounts that quietly funnel users toward illegal child abuse imagery hosted off its platforms, according to TechCrunch.

The company disclosed that it acted against 33.2 million items of child sexual exploitation material across Facebook and Instagram during the first six months of 2026, with more than 97% caught by automated systems before any user complaint. In India, the figure was 5.3 million items, more than 98% of them flagged internally first.

One of the tools uses a large language model to identify what Meta describes as "signposting" — ads that appear ordinary but are suspected of routing viewers to banned material elsewhere online. Meta said it is now evaluating an ad's destination rather than only its contents, allowing it to block offending sites and penalize the accounts behind them. Other additions include an AI agent that probes Meta's own defenses for gaps and improved detection of banned users who create replacement accounts.

The announcement follows an August agreement in which Meta will pay as much as $18 billion to resolve a child safety suit brought by 29 states, TechCrunch reported.
