One crew for the mechanical and the plumbing side

J&R Mechanical Systems, a heating, cooling and plumbing company based in Augusta, Maine, says on its website that the same crew that repairs or installs a heating or cooling system also handles the plumbing work tied to it, such as gas piping and condensate lines, instead of bringing in a second contractor. The company describes itself as local and independent, with no commissioned salespeople and, it says, no pressure to replace equipment that can still be repaired.

Working on every kind of Maine heating system

The company says it services the three heating setups common in Maine homes: cold-climate heat pumps and ductless mini-splits, forced-air furnaces, and hydronic boilers running baseboard, radiator or radiant-floor heat on oil, propane or natural gas. It also installs central and ductless air conditioning, and its website says it often recommends a heat pump because the same unit can cool in summer and heat in winter. The company says it diagnoses the underlying problem first, quotes the repair before starting work, and tells customers directly when replacement makes more financial sense than another repair.

Publishing its own cost comparisons for homeowners

Beyond service calls, J&R Mechanical's website carries a homeowner's guide comparing what it costs to heat a Maine home with oil, propane, natural gas, electric baseboard and heat pump equipment, converting each fuel's price into a cost per million British thermal units of heat actually delivered. The guide cites fuel prices from the Maine Governor's Energy Office and the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and walks through ratings such as AFUE, SEER2, HSPF2 and COP that appear on heating and cooling equipment labels.

J&R Mechanical Systems says it serves Augusta, Brunswick and 18 other nearby Maine towns, with one crew handling both the mechanical and plumbing side of a job.
