SHRM, the human resources membership organization, was hit with a $400,000 verdict after it withdrew a job offer in a dispute involving a service dog, according to Inc.

The outlet did not provide further detail in the portion of its report available, including the identity of the job candidate, the court that handled the case or how the award was divided. SHRM is one of the largest professional associations for HR practitioners in the United States, and it publishes guidance and certification programs used by employers to shape their own hiring and workplace policies.

Employers that rescind offers after learning about a candidate's circumstances can face claims under federal and state employment law, and awards in such cases can include damages tied to lost pay. No statement from SHRM was included in the material.
