Small businesses and private nonprofit groups in 29 Alabama counties can now apply for low-interest federal disaster loans tied to a drought that began on April 21, the U.S. Small Business Administration said, according to WSFA.

The declaration covers counties across central and southern Alabama, including Jefferson, Mobile, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Shelby, Baldwin and Dallas, along with Autauga, Bibb, Chilton, Clarke, Coosa, Elmore, Escambia, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Lowndes, Marengo, Monroe, Perry, Pickens, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Walker, Washington and Wilcox.

The money is offered as economic injury disaster loans, which are intended for organizations that have lost revenue because of a declared disaster rather than for physical damage. Applications are filed through the SBA's website, and the deadline is June 21, 2027.

The agency said questions about applications can be directed to its National Support Network Center at (866) SBA-HELP or by email at disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Applicants who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability can dial 7-1-1 to reach telecommunications relay services.
