Bluesky Applies For '.bsky' Domain — And Says It Won't Sell It

CEO Toni Schneider says the social startup has asked ICANN for its own top-level domain, a process that could take up to two years.

Bluesky has applied to operate ".bsky" as an internet domain suffix, alongside extensions such as .com and .org, CEO Toni Schneider disclosed in comments reported by TechCrunch on October 6, 2026.

If the application is approved, Bluesky users could shorten their handles — for example, turning a handle ending in ".bsky.social" into a name ending in ".bsky" — which the company could use to build out user profiles into fuller personal web pages.

The request has not been approved. Schneider said ICANN, the nonprofit that administers the domain name system, planned to publish the pending applications for new suffixes on October 7, 2026, with Bluesky's among them. Completing the process takes 18 to 24 months, according to TechCrunch.

Bluesky told TechCrunch it has not decided how .bsky addresses would be requested, registered or distributed, but said it does not intend to sell or monetize them. Domain registration can be a revenue source, a notable consideration for a venture-funded company that does not sell advertising.

Chief Operating Officer Rose Wang said the company was built on the idea that users "should own your presence online, not rent it from a platform that can take it away."
