CedarDB said on October 14 that its cloud database, CedarDB Cloud, is available to a limited group of users, an announcement the company made onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, according to TechCrunch.

The Munich-based company is a spinout of the Technical University of Munich, built on a research project called Umbra and founded by five of its researchers. Its database engine is designed to handle both transactional records, such as orders and payments, and analytical queries, a split that has traditionally required separate systems. Co-founder and chief executive Moritz Sichert said demand has grown as companies use AI agents to ask questions of their data in natural language.

CedarDB is compatible with PostgreSQL, which the company said lowers switching costs because customers do not have to rebuild applications. It released an on-premise product, CedarDB Enterprise, and a free Community Edition in May 2025, at the same time as a 5.3 million euro seed round, roughly $6 million.

The startup is competing against 20 other companies in TechCrunch's Startup Battlefield. It plans to serve its first cloud customers with its current staff of 14 and raise another round as traction grows, Sichert said.
